I have been experimenting a little with the volume and sensitivity settings and I think that at this point, generally, lower sensitivity and higher volume is working a little better than both high volume and high sensitivity. I do intend to keep messing with this.

I have been too busy to do much experimenting with different frequencies, but will start soon and then note what I discover. I realize this is very much controlled by the programming, but I’d like to get some kind of idea what the mapping is.

I am still, as much as possible in a passive listening environment, i.e. I am not trying to have a conversation, removing my hearing aid and depending on the implant. This makes it much harder to comprehend speech. However, I feel it is one way I can force my brain to try and figure out what the implant is hearing.

What seems to happen, is that in the middle of someone speaking, their voice will sound completely natural. It may just be a word, or a few words, but for a moment all the bass is there and the Donald Duck filter has gone off. At this point I try to concentrate on “hearing” that frequency but it doesn’t work.

I had another reboot event during charging. I was sitting perfectly still and the charger had reached 98% when the implant turned off. Looking at the screen of the charger, which had 22% battery left, it said that the implant had rebooted and to start the process again. This time, instead of turning the implant on first and then restarting the charging, I just restarted the charging. It seemed to take a longer time to complete the charge, especially once it had reached 100%. Where it sat for about 5 minutes before saying that charging was complete. At that point I simply set the profile back to 3 from “off”. I then had to change the volume and sensitivity settings back to where I had them. It would be nice if it stored my settings.

I have now managed to get in the pool. I can’t say whether or not it helps to have a conversation in the pool as I was on my own, but generally it is nicer as I can hear environmental sounds which, for the most part, are sounding fairly natural.

I guess speech comprehension is far more complex, as may be human voices, but I am hopeful things will continue to improve in that respect.
