Cochlear Implant A+5

I did not check my battery level this morning as I am pretty comfortable that it consumes around 23-25% per day. Given that the warning beeps are set at 30%, once it beeps I have another 24 hours before I really need to get concerned about charging it given that I must not let the energy drop below 5%.

We were in church yesterday morning and I had no difficulty with the service at all. The music sounded fine, the announcements and the teaching. The only time I had any issues was when the men all gathered outside for a prayer time. It’s a large, distributed in a circle, group and I just can’t hear anyone well enough and am too far away to do any meaningful lip reading.

After the service I changed my profile setting to profile 3. It seems to me the difference between profiles is largely with respect to volume although there may be sensitivity differences as well. The implant definitely seems louder. In any event, incidental sounds are becoming more identifiable and clearer daily. Speech is still a challenge but, apart from removing my hearing aid and concentrating on listening to the implant, I have not yet really done any training other than reading aloud to myself which is rudimentary at best.

There were some moments when I thought my wife’s voices was clearer but I’m not sure if that’s true. Have to see over the coming week.

This morning, as with most Monday mornings, I go to a small (6 – 12) men’s study at a local restaurant. I always get there about 1/2 hour early so I can have something to eat so I took my hearing aid out and listened to the other two speaking with just my implant. I think my comprehension is improving but everyone still sounds like they are breathing helium.

Some sounds, like breathing, are crystal clear. I can also hear the computer keyboard now as I type. I don’t recall how it used to sound, or if I ever heard it before so I’m not sure if the sound I am hearing from it is correct or not. I suspect it is distorted because it’s a “chicklet” keyboard and doesn’t sound “natural”.

I have decided that I am going to complete the first week posting daily but will switch to posting once a week starting the second week, unless there is a significant change. By significant change I mean a real change in tone, distortion, sound or speech recognition. Any day I detect a significant change, good or bad, I will post.

If you are reading this, God bless you. He has been very good to me.
