Cochlear A+2

This is the morning of the second day after my Envoy Acclaim cochlear implant was activated so I am writing about yesterday (Activation+1) and last night.

Yesterday my cochlear was still producing a fair amount of “noise”. I am not sure if the noise is just sound that my brain no longer recognizes, which I suspect it is, or if it is actually some form of noise. I can’t see any other reason why it would gradually “fade” except that your brain starts to recognize the sounds as individual sound information and processes it accordingly.

I did not spend a lot of time yesterday with just my implant on and no hearing aid, maybe 10 – 15 minutes. One of the strange sounds it was listening to was my logitech chicklet keyboard as I was updating my Zenith 750 SD build log and communicating with other cochlear individuals on Reddit.

I did try listening to some BNA (Nashville) tower traffic but it wasn’t really intelligible except for a few words here and there.

I listened to Misty, sung by Johnny Mathis, with just my implant and a little bit of hearing aid, and while I could recognize the tune, it wasn’t particularly entertaining due to the distortion.

At one point I was communicating with a support person on chat and every time they sent a response the system produced a knock sound out of the computer speakers. It was clear, but I couldn’t really tell where it was coming from despite the speakers being directly in front of me next to the screen.

I also spent about 15 minutes watching cable TV news with and without captions. I can definitely hear the TV better than I was able with 2 hearing aids but I expect it will still improve significantly.

I played the guitar a bit too, with both hearing aid and implant on. I had no problem picking out meolody / pitch but it sounded pretty scratchy.

Last night was a great night with all of the noise of the first night completely abated. No pillow or sheet noise, no other unintelligible “static” type noises.
